PhD in Computer Science

EXPERTISE

My research expertise focuses on the application of digital technologies to the solution of specific industry and social challenges. Machine learning, databases, and cloud computing are the technological areas of major expertise, with applications varying from healthcare and medical imaging to more business-oriented industries, such as hospitality and enterprises.

SHORT BIO

I am an Assistant Professor at the University of Limassol. I received my MSc in Computer Engineering (cum laude) from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, in Italy. The master thesis was developed at the Burnham Institute in San Diego, in collaboration with the University of California San Diego (UCSD). I received my PhD in Computer Science (with honor) from the Leiden University, in The Netherlands, where I also obtained my post-doc (both in the computational analysis of MRI brain images in case of neurodegeneration). I have over a decade of experience working in the industry and as an IT project manager and data analytics consultant.

Projects

Automatic email classification for the hospitality industry

The hospitality industry has gained considerable benefit from the adoption of customer data platform (CDP) and customer relationship management (CRM) platforms. Within this complex ecosystem, the collection and processing of customer emails play a vital role while managing reservations, increase customer loyalty, and fulfil customer everchanging expectations.

We are investigating the use of natural language processing, transfer learning and pre-trained models, and deep learning recurrent neural network, within the context of tier-1 hospitality chains, to automatically classify different types of incoming emails and extract relevant information..

Bibliometric analysis of digital transformation based on complex network theory

Within this project, we are investigating the development of research on digital transformation, focusing on the last ten years of available publications. Concepts (i.e., keywords) of key publications are linked into a complex graph which is then analysed in terms of graph theory and graph properties. Such analysis may lead to new insights into which sub-fields of digital transformation are mostly studies, how they change over the years, and they connect to each other into communities of research topics, and ultimately shed lights on new potential line of research.
